Christian Politics and Elections

Christians fall into a binary, just not the one you’re thinking.

It’s not Republican/Democrat or Liberal/Conservative it’s “apolitical vs. over-political” or “Politics don’t matter; Jesus is King” vs. “Politicians will save AMERICA”

The truth is, this is an unhelpful paradigm. There has been no president, senator, representative, or states attorney in history who has entirely cured the worlds ills or had no effect on the world that “God so loved.”

But we Christians love to fall into our binary camps and shout at the other side and our voices are undermining our witness, make no mistake. We yell, with a seeming endlessly increasing certainty, that we are right; that Trump or Biden will save America or that politics are pointless and the rest of the world is listening. The exasperation of non-Christians and anti-Christian alike increase proportionally to the certainty of our respective position. The truth is, politics matter but they’re not everything. It was politicians who BOTH ended and propped up slavery, racism, the systemic evil of Jim Crow. Politicians, more than anyone, have the ability make legislation and policy to curb the systemic evils of our society including, but not limited to, poverty, child detention, mass incarceration, and the sanctity of life from womb to tomb. They will attempt to do this in different ways but they are nevertheless important.

So be encouraged to participate in the political process. Do your research. Vote for your neighbors good not just your own. Vote for policies that will better bring about the kingdom of God on earth. Vote for the leaders who most reflect your faith values. But when you’re done go home and pray the following:

Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name
Give us this day our daily bread; Forgive us our sins as we forgive the sins of others
Lead us not into selfish temptation but deliver us from Evil.
